I received my academic degrees at Tel Aviv University, where I completed both a bachelor’s degree and a PhD in electrical and electronics engineering. After a postdoctoral fellowship, I returned to my alma mater 33 years ago as a senior faculty member and was subsequently promoted to the rank of full professor. My research spans a range of fields within electro-optics, with a strong focus on practical application and real-world relevance. Highlights of my work include the development of a groundbreaking barcode scanner, a revolutionary optical fiber designed for medical surgeries, innovative optical components integrated into various systems, and even contributions to the modern camera arrays found in today’s smartphones. These and other projects have been implemented in real-world applications, allowing me to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of global technology.
My academic achievements include the publication of over 240 scientific articles in leading journals, 3 chapters and more than 140 registered patents, most of which have been implemented in industry. Above all, I take the greatest pride in the dozens of talented students I’ve mentored, many of whom are now leading significant advancements in Israel’s high-tech sector and contributing to innovative research in academia.
Over the years, I’ve founded numerous startups, including three that I led as CEO. Subsequently, the companies were sold to giant multinational companies that used their technology to develop groundbreaking products. For example, the company Corephotonics LTD, which I founded and managed, sold to Samsung to serve as its global development center for groundbreaking cameras. This company developed technology that is integrated into billions of phones around the world, and many of the world’s inhabitants regularly benefit from the technology we developed.
From 2008 to 2010, I served as Chief Scientist at the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology and as Chairman of the Israel-Germany Foundation. Currently, I serve as a member of the Israel Innovation Authority Council.
In August 2025, I joined the Kinneret family as President of the Academic College, with the hope of contributing to the growth and advancement of the institution. Above all, to support its students and graduates realize their full potential.
On a more personal note. I’m a firm believer in expanding one’s horizons and my main soul passion is Hebrew poetry. I study and explore modern Hebrew verse, with a special interest in epic poetry from the last 150 years. I delve into the works of key poets like Nathan Alterman and Uri Zvi Greenberg, whose contributions have deeply shaped the field. When it comes to physical well-being, my favorite pastime is long-distance running. It’s through running that I’ve come to appreciate a simple truth: the more difficult the path, the greater the challenge—and the reward.
