ANNOUNCING: The Grand Opening of the Kokhav HaYarden Lookout Point in the Memory of Maj. Gen. Dan Shomron

On June 12, 2011, thousands of participants including members of Shomron's family, military colleagues arrived to a very impressive ceremony to celebrate Shomron's legacy. The new Kokhav HaYarden lookout point is one of the most beautiful views in all of Israel, looking over the Jordan Valley, surrounded by the Golan and Gilad Mountain. This backdrop provided the landscape for Shomron's childhood, as he was born and raised in Kibbutz Ashdot Yaakov. The organization responsible for founding this new lookout point is the Dan Shomron Center for Society, Security and Peace Studies at the Kinneret College on the Sea of Galilee: in cooperation with the Israel National Parks Association, the Foundation for the Memory of Dan Shomron and the Valley Springs Regional Council.

Mr. Shimon Peres, President of the State of Israel, who unfortunately could not attend, sent his formal greetings, "Dan was a very glorious warrior who saw many victories. He was an adored and charismatic general, a brilliant military strategist who understood that a human's size could compensate for a small territory. As a military man and as Chief of Staff, Dan served the people and the land. He put his indelible mark on the image of the IDF as a human-oriented army which aims for excellence. As an army which stands before dangers and the progress of opportunities even when they are difficult to reveal. Generosity, modesty and friendship were all found in Dan's heart. That is the way he will be remembered in the hearts of his family, friends and the entire nation".

Anat Boukai, daughter of Dan Shomron, revealed the stone marker which states "This site is dedicated to the memory of Dan Shomron". The speakers at the event were: Former Minister and Chief of Staff, Amnon Lipkin Shahak, Commander of the IDF Unit which carried out the Entebbe Raid, Mooki Betzer, Sister of Dan Shomron, Shlomit Shimron, Valley Springs Regional Council Head, Yoram Karin, the Head of the Dan Shomron Center for Society, Security and Peace Studies at the Kinneret College on the Sea of Galilee, Prof. Zeev Drory, CEO of the Israel National Parks Authority, Eli Amitai and the head of the Foundation for the Memory of Dan Shomron, Itzik Segev. The lookout point is located on the eastern cliff near the Crusader castle, and it also overlooks the ORT Wingate training grounds. This unique legacy site will combine the view together with the social/military legacy on Israel's eastern border.
