Our Goal is to Facilitate Learning -- whether on Campus, Online,
Face-to-Face or Remote
It’s important to integrate creative methods in our teaching. At
Kinneret we encourage our faculty to use digital technologies as
a means for facilitating active learning, thereby making students
take agency on their own learning experience. But it’s important
not to confuse method with objective. Online tools are not an end
but a means. Our goal is to create empowering learning spaces for
students. To achieve this, we need to define what learning outcomes
we are aiming for, what teaching methodologies can be implemented,
and what tools are appropriate for a given class, online or otherwise.
Finally, as faculty it’s important that we ask ourselves— what do our
students’ need in order to experience meaningful learning processes
and what can we do to encourage that.
A Defining Moment
On Sunday, March 14, our administration called for an emergency
meeting with all department heads. We met in capsules in the
Alperin Auditorium, carefully following the Covid-19 guidelines. We
sat at great distances from one another in the great hall, trying to
digest what was happening and to formulate our next steps. There
was a true sense of partnership and shared responsibility. A sense of
commitment to the college community, their health and welfare, and
to our role as an education institution. For me, this was a defining
moment during the COVID-19 crises, but even more so, a defining
moment in my integration into the College community. I felt proud
and privileged to be a part of the team leading the college during this
significant time. They say that the best way to get to know people, as
well as ourselves, is by working together, especially in times of crisis.
The Covid-19 crisis provided me with the opportunity to get to know
the Kinneret College community, quickly and intimately. It happened
in a completely different manner than I had planned and required
a lot more work and effort than I thought it would, but it was much
more meaningful than I had hoped.
